San Diego, Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means 'a whale's vagina'. The Padres have generational MVP talent in Manny Machado, Juan Soto, and Fernando Tatis. They have a solid pitching staff, and depth around the whole roster. It's a sunny beautiful city, so why don't players flock there?
After getting bounced in the NLCS, the Padres set their sights on some massive free agents. Despite have two-to-three elite shortstops on the roster, the Padres offered Tre Turner $342 million overall, which would've made him the highest paid shortstop in the league. Turner declined and opted for a 11 year, $300M deal with the Phillies instead. Then out of the blue, the Padres became Aaron Judge suitors, when it was always the Yankees and Giants. They offered him $400M... Judge decided to stay in New York for 9 Years, $360M.
Leaving tens of millions on the table, in this economy? Sheesh. Not only are they having a hard time attracting free agents, their internal guys are leaving too. Josh Bell signed with the Guardians, and Mike Clevinger left for the White Sox.
So we should be asking the question... what's going on in San Diego?
