Betting The Bracket: March 15th - First Four and NIT

4-2 to start the early days of the tournament. Not bad. The over/under lines are my kryptonite, hand up! Let's keep it going for the second night of First Fours (that's a mouth full).

16th Seeds Matchup - Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Texas Southern

  • Moneyline: FDU: (+125) | TSU (-145)

  • Spread: FDU: +2.5 (-110) | TSU -2.5 (-110)

  • Total: 147.5 - Over: (-110) | Under: (-110)

Another "does anybody actually care because the one seed is going to kick their teeth in" game. The 16th seed title match that gets the lovely pleasure of facing Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers.

Texas Sothern's PJ Henry is coming off an excellent SWAC Tournament, after averaging 18.7 points per game, earning the MVP nod. This squad can rebound like no other, averaging close to 38 boards per match. This is the Tigers third straight tournament by the way.

I know the NEC and I know that FDU is a bottom ranked squad. Their KemPom rating is 312 out of 360, the worst in the entire field. They didn't even win their own tournament, how are they going to make a run now? I will give them credit, because KP also has them as an efficient team, averaging 106.2 points per 100 possessions.

My Picks

  • Texas Southern ML and -2.5

11th Seeds Matchup - Nevada vs. Arizona State

  • Moneyline: NV: (+120) | ASU (-140)

  • Spread: NV: +2 (-110) | ASU -2 (-110)

  • Total: 155 - Over: (-110) | Under: (-110)

Nevada is limping into this tournament after losing three straight games. By the way, those loses were all non-tourney teams. Yikes. The Mountain West doesn't fair to well on the big state either. In the last 50 tourney games, the conference is just 14-35-1 against the spread. Nevada is a big team, literally, with all of their starting five standing at over 6'4. They are prominently great on either side of the ball, but they know how to make their free throws, ranking 22nd in free-throw attempt rate and sixth in free-throw percentage.

Arizona State on the other hand, has three dynamic players that can cause some problems for the Wolf Pack. Desmond Cambridge, DJ Horne, and Frankie Collins. They can spread the floor and score, which will help them win this matchup. I honestly believe that Arizona State will stomp Nevada, as long as they are running on all cylinders.

My Picks

  • Arizona State ML and -2
