Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Howard Football defensive back Carson Hinton.
For the first time since 1996, Howard played in a bowl game to close out its football season. The Bison traveled to Atlanta to take on 11-1 Florida A&M in the Celebration Bowl on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons.
In the game, DB Carson Hinton played exceptionally, recording 2 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
The forced fumble and recovery occurred on the same play, when Hinton hit FAMU’s Jeremy Moussa on the Rattlers third offensive play of the game, with Howard already leading 7-0.
Six plays later, the Bison scored another touchdown to make it 14-0.
In the fourth quarter, with Howard trailing 24-19 and FAMU with the ball, Hinton stepped up in a huge spot once again, intercepting a pass and returning it 27 yards for the go-ahead score, putting Howard on top 26-24.
Unfortunately for Hinton and the Bison, Howard never scored again.
FAMU scored a touchdown to retake the lead just four plays after the interception and never looked back, defeating Howard 30-26.
Nonetheless, Hinton’s performance in the Celebration Bowl was one of the better single game performances by a Howard player all year.
Not the worst way to end the second consecutive MEAC title winning season.
The DMV saw nine teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, the Howard football team, and the Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, and American basketball teams
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin had 6 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown in the 28-20 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Washington Wizards Center Daniel Gafford had 26 points and 17 rebounds in Sunday’s 112-108 loss to Phoenix.
Washington Wizards Guard Tyus Jones had a triple-double on Friday against the Pacers, scoring 13 points, hauling in 10 rebounds, and dishing out 11 assists in Washington’s fourth win of the season
