DMV Star of the Week - Derik Queen

Writer: Zach PenriceZach Penrice

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Maryland Basketball Center Derik Queen.

The freshman star out of Baltimore has put up huge numbers throughout the season and is a big reason why the Terrapins finished in second place in the Big 10 regular season standings.

On the year, Queen posted 13 double-doubles, including in seven of Maryland’s final eight regular season games.

This past week, he added two more double-doubles, pouring in 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in Wednesday’s road win over Michigan, and adding 10 points and 10 boards in Saturday’s win over Northwestern.

The Terps have won seven of eight entering the Big 10 Tournament; with Queen leading the way down low, the sky is the limit for where Maryland can go with its season on the line in the coming weeks.

The DMV saw nine teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Wizards Guard Jordan Poole scored 34 points in Saturday’s 118-117 win over Toronto.

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored a penalty kick goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sporting KC. He has now scored in all three games to start the season.

  • Washington Spirit Midfielder Leicy Santos scored the game-tying goal of Friday night’s NWSL Challenge Cup win over Orlando; the Spirit eventually won on penalties, 4-2.

  • Georgetown Guard Micah Peavy scored 29 points and hauled in 10 rebounds while never subbing out of Saturday’s 83-77 loss to DePaul in Chicago.
