Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals First Baseman/Designated Hitter Joey Meneses.
In Sunday’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Meneses went 3-5 at the plate as the DH, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 4 RBI’s.
In the 9th inning, with the Nats trailing by two runs and on the verge of the being on the wrong end of a series sweep, Meneses hit a three-run homerun to put Washington on top 9-8 that ultimately won the game.
The day after his 31st birthday, Meneses played the hero and hit his second long ball of the 2023 season to help the Nats win a game in which they trailed by as many as four runs.
On the year, Meneses is hitting .277 and is in the lineup nearly every day for Washington, predominantly as the designated hitter.
The Nats went 4-3 this past week to improve its record once again, but still remains in last place in the star-studded NL East.
Still a long way to go in 2023, and plenty of bright spots to look to on the Nationals roster.
The DMV saw three teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, and Washington Spirit.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
D.C. United Forward Taxiarchis Fountas scored his third goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to FC Cincinnati on Saturday
Washington Spirit Forward Trinity Rodman scored her third goal of the season in a 3-1 win on Saturday over San Diego
