DMV Star of the Week - Joey Meneses

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Designated Hitter Joey Meneses.

This is Meneses’ second time winning the DMV Star of the Week award, and for good reason.

The 31-year old is in just his second season in the major league’s and had an outstanding weekend series against the Texas Rangers.

In three games against Texas, Meneses went 5-11 with 4 home runs and 5 RBI’s. To homer four times in three days is a remarkable feat that very few accomplish.

Entering the series, Meneses had just two home runs on the year, more than doubling his total for the season.

The Nationals took two out of three games from the Rangers and have won four of their last five series’ entering the All Star break.

The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • D.C. United Forward Taxiarchis Fountas scored twice this week, first netting the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas and putting away the game-tying goal against Inter Miami in a 2-2 draw on Saturday

  • Washington Mystics Guard Ariel Atkins had a double-double in Friday’s 96-88 win over Indiana, scoring 26 points and hauling in 10 rebounds in 35 minutes

  • Washington Nationals Right Fielder Lane Thomas drove in 3 runs in Thursday’s 5-4 loss to Cincinnati
