DMV Star of the Week - Keibert Ruiz

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Catcher Keibert Ruiz.

Ruiz had a big week for Washington, but no performance was more important than his dominant night in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

In the 10-6 win over the Dodgers that helped Washington avoid a sweep, Ruiz went 3-4 at the plate with 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. He homered twice in the win, his sixth and seventh long balls of the year, which is tied for second best on the team.

Ruiz is currently batting .232 with 24 RBI’s in 49 games for Washington. The 24-year old Ruiz is in his first year of an eight year contract extension worth $50 million.

The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Mystics Forward Elena Delle Donne had a 23 points and 10 rebounds performance in Friday’s 75-74 victory over Dallas

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored what would be the winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Inter Miami. Benteke’s 8 MLS goals is tied for seventh across the league

  • Washington Spirit Forward Trinity Rodman scored the lone Washington goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Lousiville. The goal is Rodman’s fourth of the season, which is tied for sixth most in NWSL
