Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Catcher Keibert Ruiz.
In this weekend’s opening series in Cincinnati, Ruiz went 4-12 at the plate, including a stellar 3-4 performance in Saturday’s 7-6 comeback victory.
In the win, Ruiz had 3 RBIs and hit a solo home run in the 8th inning that tied the game at 4. An inning later, he tied the game again by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-6, moments before the Nationals took the lead for good as a part of a three run 9th inning to take the lead and win the game.
The Nationals are a young team, but have an exciting future, especially with players like Ruiz leading the way heading into 2024.
The DMV saw six teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the D.C. Defenders
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Wizards Guard Jordan Poole scored 38 points in Wednesday’s OT loss against Brooklyn
D.C. United Midfielder Pedro Santos scored the lone goal of the match in the 84th minute in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Montreal
D.C. Defenders Kicker Matthew McCrane hit 4 field goals in Sunday’s loss against San Antonio, including a 50-yard field goal in the first quarter
