DMV Star of the Week - Luis Garcia Jr.

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Second-Baseman Luis Garcia Jr.

The 24 year-old Garcia had a monster week, going 10-20 at the plate (.500 avg) with 8 RBIs, 5 runs scored, 3 home runs, a .545 on-base-percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

His biggest performance came against the Mets in a 7-5 win on Wednesday night. In the victory, Garcia went 2-3 with 3 runs scored, 2 home runs, and 4 RBI’s, reaching base on three out of four plate appearances.

He had 2 RBIs in each of the next two games for Washington, an extra innings loss and an emphatic 14-6 win over St. Louis.

The Nats have struggled a bit over the last two weeks, but the young core that includes Garcia continues to shine week to week, making for plenty of reasons to be excited about the team's future.

The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Spirit Striker Ouleymata Sarr netted her 7th goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bay FC. Her 7 goals in NWSL play is tied for fourth-most in the league this season

  • Washington Nationals Left Fielder James Wood had 5 RBIs in Saturday’s 14-6 victory over St. Louis
