2026 NY Giants 53-Man Roster Prediction: Tough Decisions Ahead on Cutdown Day

The living legend, Kenny McDonald (me), returns for his (my) 3rd Annual New York Giants 53-Man Roster Prediction.

We've arrived at Cut-down Day, and first-year head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen have some tough decisions to make. All 32 NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by today, August 30th at 6pm ET, making it one of the most stressful days of the year for front offices, coaching staffs, and players across the league.

Ever since my 2025 projection a year ago in which I picked over 40 players correctly, this franchise has undergone a complete facelift. That should hopefully be a great thing as Harbaugh and a brand new coaching staff look to re-establish a brand of Giants football we haven't seen since the Tom Coughlin era.

Without further ado, I present to you my 53-man roster projection for the 2026 New York Giants.

The Offense (26)

Quarterback:

• Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston (2)

  • Russell Wilson is long gone and now picking up shifts in the CBS studio. Jaxson Dart is heading into year 2 and looks to take a massive step forward in his development, while ol' reliable Jameis Winston is back for another season as the back up. This team only needs these two quarterbacks on the active roster. I expect the Giants to carry a third on the practice squad.

Running back:

• Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy Jr., Najee Harris (4)

  • Cam Skattebo is back and healthy! He will be the bell cow and is set to eat up most of the carries in this offense. I predicted an Ahmad Bradshaw/Brandon Jacobs "Thunder and Lightning" dynamic between him and Tyrone Tracy Jr. prior to last season, but things will look a bit different in 2026. Tracy Jr. has struggled at times during the preseason, and the Giants recently signed veteran Najee Harris as a complementary addition to the backfield. We'll see how the touches ultimately shake out in the running back room, but I expect the Giants to keep all four of these guys on the 53-man roster.

Fullback:

• Patrick Ricard (1)

  • The big body from Baltimore! Another Harbaugh transplant makes the team, giving the Giants a dynamic new tool to work with in the backfield. Picture this: Jaxson Dart under center, Patrick Ricard and Cam Skattebo lined up in an I-formation, and Ricard leading through the C-gap to clear a lane for Skatt. If that doesn't make you want to yell "FOOTBALL GUYS," I don't know what will.

Tight End:

• Isaiah Likely, Theo Johnson, Chris Manhertz (3)

  • Isaiah Likely is the Giants' big free agent signing from this past offseason and has an already strong repoire with coach Harbaugh. Theo Johnson will be involved and should complement Likely. Chris Manhertz just makes the cut and will serve as a blocking tight end. However, now that Patrick Ricard is in the fold, I can see a world where Manhertz scarcely sees the field or potentially does not make the roster.

Wide Receiver:

• Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney, Braxton Berrios, Odell Beckham Jr., Dalen Cambre (7)

  • Malik Nabers leads the way for his third season, but the wide receiver room will look a little bit different this year. Granted, Darius Slayton will be back and should have a place in the offense, but most of the other guys here are fresh faces. Malachi Fields is a rookie that the Giants traded up for in the 2026 draft and who showed some flashes in the preseason. OBJ is a lock after preseason game three, where he tallied three receptions for 53 yards.

Offensive Line:

• Andrew Thomas, Jermaine Eluemunor, Jon Runyan, John Michael Schmitz Jr., Francis Mauigoa, Marcus Mbow, Aaron Stinnie, Lucas Patrick, J.C. Davis (9)

  • The Giants bring back four starters from last year and add 10th overall pick Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa as their new right guard. Mauigoa brings a really strong skillset to this line, which is now starting to look like a true area of strength for this team. Marcus Mbow will be a nice backup tackle and J.C. Davis is another 2026 draft pick that makes the cut.

The Defense + Special Teams (27)

Defensive Line:

• D.J. Reader, Shelby Harris, Darius Alexander, Bobby Jamison-Travis, C.J. Okoye (5)

  • Welp, there's a gaping hole that Dexter Lawrence used to fill in this Giants defensive line. They've done all they can to try and rectify the loss of Lawrence by bringing in veterans Shelby Harris and D.J. Reader. This group looks a whole lot different this year. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the positional group the Giants are most active in solidifying through a trade or on the waiver wire post-cut day.

Edge/Outside Linebackers:

• Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, Chauncey Golston (4)

  • This is the only group with continuity from last year. I predicted all four of these guys to make the team in 2025 and they all did. This year, my prediction stays the same. Brian Burns is coming off an All-Pro season where he notched 16.5 sacks, while Abdul Carter will look to pick up the strong play we saw from him at the end of his rookie season. Kayvon Thibodeaux and Chauncey Golston are excellent depth pieces, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants test Golston out on the defensive line.

Inside Linebackers:

• Tremaine Edmunds, Arvell Reese, Jack Kelly, Micah McFadden, Zaire Barnes (5)

  • The Giants needed to address their atrocious run defense, and they did that by adding Edmunds in free agency and Arvell Reese through the draft. Those two will start at the linebacker spots to begin the season. Kelly is a 6th round draft pick who has flashed on special teams and McFadden provides a depth piece. This unit could quickly turn into a strength for this team.

Safeties:

• Jevon Holland, Tyler Nubin, Jason Pinnock, Ar'Darius Washington (4)

  • I love that the Giants brought Pinnock back to compete with Tyler Nubin for the strong safety spot. Both will make the team, but they will continue to compete for reps at a position that will need to be very physical and able to handle run-stopping duties in the box. Ar'Darius Washington is another former Baltimore guy and has shown flashes on defense in the preseason. He also brings a lot of experience on special teams, and we all know John Harbaugh and new special teams coach Chris Horton love guys that can get after it on specials.

Cornerbacks:

• Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II, Deonte Banks, Dru Phillips, Colton Hood, Art Green (6)

  • I think the Giants keep six cornerbacks to ensure they have solid depth at the position heading into the season. Newsome II and Hood are the newcomers, with Newsome II receiving a prove-it deal in the offseason and Hood being the Giants' 2026 second round draft pick. There are question marks around Adebo as a no. 1 CB, but this season should tell us a lot about whether or not that contract was worth it. Who knows, maybe defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson can unlock something in Deonte Banks.

Special Teams:

• Dominc Zvada, Jordan Stout, Ben Mann (3)

  • Zvada wins this kicking battle, outperforming Ben Sauls. Stout, another former Raven, provides an upgrade at the punter position. Casey Kreiter is gone, so it's up to the rookie, Mann, to take the long snapper reins.

Final Thoughts

Last year, I predicted that the 2025 squad would be better than 2024. I will make that prediction once again here, but with a bit more conviction than in years past.

The Giants are now actually building a culture around John Harbaugh, they've signed a handful of free agents that will immediately make an impact, and they had a really strong 2026 NFL draft. There is reason to be excited about this team, albeit with caution.

The 2025 Giants ended with a 3-14 record and blew five double-digit or fourth quarter leads. I expect them to clean up that part of their game under the leadership of Harbaugh and a new coaching staff.

2026 could be the year we finally begin to see this team turn the leaf and start to become competitive again in the NFC East.
