The Commanders take the field on Sunday against the New York Giants for the second time this season.

Washington is coming off a 29-26 loss to Seattle in which the Seahawks won on a last-second field goal. It’s the fifth straight Commanders game that was decided by one possession and the third in which Washington came out on the losing end.

Quarterback Sam Howell dazzled once again for the Commanders, throwing for over 300 yards for the third straight game. He previously had just one 300 yard passing game in his prior eight career starts.

The Washington QB threw for 312 yards on 29/44 passing and 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. But it wasn’t enough.

Howell currently leads the NFL in passing yards and is tied for 5th in touchdowns, but he also leads the NFL in sacks with 47, which is 14 more than any other quarterback.

Where the Commanders have struggled is on defense. Washington currently ranks 29th in total defense and is 31st in points allowed per game (27.4).

Howell is playing great and is commanding the offense like the franchise quarterback that he clearly is, but the team will continue to struggle as long as the defense is giving up nearly four touchdowns per game.

The good news for Washington, they go against a New York Giants team with a backup QB in a starting role and a squad that has been decimated by injury.

A great chance to get back on a winning track for the Commanders on Sunday.

  • Head Coach: Brian Daboll (2nd season, 11-15-1 record in New York)

  • Record: 2-8 (1-2, 4th NFC East)

  • Last Time Out: Lost @ Dallas 49-17 on 11/12/23

  • Player to Watch: Saquon Barkley

What an absolute disaster of a season it has been for the New York Giants.

Just a year removed from a 9-7-1 season and a road playoff win over Minnesota, the Giants are 2-8 under second-year Head Coach Brian Daboll and are one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Quarterback Daniel Jones signed a massive contract extension this offseason and appeared in just six games this year, only finishing four of them. He suffered a season-ending injury in the loss to Las Vegas on November 5, finishing the year with 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, along with a rushing TD.

With backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve, the Giants are left with rookie Tommy DeVito as the starter.

DeVito went undrafted this past year and has now appeared in three games this season for New York, including his first career start a week ago against Dallas. In the game, the rookie out of Illinois threw for 86 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception on 14/27 passing. He also rushed 7 times for 41 yards.

It’s a very bleak outlook for the rest of the way in New York. They are on their third string quarterback and still have seven games to play.

This game @ Washington is one of their best remaining chances to maybe get a win. If not, it’s entirely possible that this team goes the final seven weeks of the season without a victory.
