DMV Star of the Week - Christian Benteke

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke

The long-time Crystal Palace Striker is now 33 years old and tearing up MLS, scoring two goals in his latest outing on Saturday in D.C. United’s 2-1 win over Seattle, bringing his season total up to 8 goals in 8 matches.

His eight goals this season is tied for the second-most in MLS and just one goal behind Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi.

Benteke has been carrying his team in the score column early in the year and has his team currently in the playoff picture through the opening 10 games of the MLS regular season.

The DMV saw five teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the D.C. Defenders

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Nationals DH Nick Senzel hit 2 home runs and had 5 RBIs in Sunday’s 12-9 win over Miami after falling behind 7-0.

  • Washington Nationals left fielder Jesse Winker had 4 RBIs in Washington’s 11-4 win over Miami on Saturday

  • Washington Capitals RW Tom Wilson had a goal and an assist in the Caps 4-3 Game 2 loss in New York on Tuesday
