DMV Star of the Week - Darren Buchanan

Updated: Jan 29

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performances. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best, and naming that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is George Washington Forward Darren Buchanan

The Revs lost back-to-back games this past week, but the George Washington freshman has been a revelation for Head Coach Chris Caputo.

The 6’7” freshman forward out of Washington DC, Buchanan has averaged 15.5 PPG and is shooting 55% from the field in his first collegiate season.

This past week, he had another phenomenal game, scoring 24 points and hauling in 12 rebounds in a disappointing 80-70 loss at home to La Salle.

In 20 games played for the Revs this season, Buchanan has scored less than 10 points just three times, with 5 straight double-figure performances heading into this week.

The Revs have been up-and-down since opening up A10 Conference play, but Buchanan continues to shine in his freshman season.

As long as he’s around, GW will continue to be in the mix in the conference.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, and the Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, and American basketball teams

Here are some honorable mentions for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Capitals Center Dylan Strome scored twice in the Caps’ loss on the road against Colorado on Wednesday

  • Maryland Basketball Forward Juju Reese scored 15 points and hauled in 16 rebounds in Saturday’s win over Nebraska

  • Washington Capitals Right Winger Anthony Mantha scored two goals in Washington’s 5-3 loss against Minnesota on Tuesday
