Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Georgetown guard Primo Spears.
In two games on the road against Villanova and #8 Xavier, the sophomore Duquesne transfer, averaged 28 points and 9 assists in his two performances.
In Saturday’s 95-82 loss to Xavier, Georgetown was without two of its top three scorers, Brandon Murray and Jay Heath. That left Primo Spears virtually on his own to manufacture offense.
He delivered and then some, scoring a career-high 37 points while dishing out 11 assists.
“Brandon [Murray] wasn’t there, so the bulk of the shots went to him [Spears],” Hoyas Head Coach Patrick Ewing said. “He took the challenge. He forced it a
little bit at times, but we needed him to score to be in the game.”
It still wasn’t enough, as Georgetown extended its record-breaking conference losing streak to 29 games.
If the Hoyas can get healthier and get continued performances like this from Spears, the streak will surely end soon.
The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, American and Howard basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Wizards forward Rui Hachimura scored 30 points off the bench to lead the Wizards to a 138-118 victory over Orlando on Saturday night
Maryland guard Jahmir Young scored 26 points in Thursday’s 64-58 win over Michigan
Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov had 2 points in two of Washington’s four games this past week, assisting on 2 goals in the 4-0 win over Arizona and adding an assist against the New York Islanders before scoring the game-winning goal in overtime
Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma had a monster performance in Wednesday’s win over the Knicks, scoring 27 points with 13 rebounds and 7 assists
Georgetown forward Akok Akok scored 14 points and hauled in 10 rebounds in Saturday’s 95-82 loss @ #8 Xavier
