  • Head Coach: Patrick Ewing (6th season, 73-91 record at Georgetown)

  • Record: 5-7 (0-1 in Big East)

  • Last Time Out: Lost vs. Xavier 102-89 on 12/16

  • Player to Watch: Primo Spears

Georgetown has 21 straight Big East losses. On Friday night, the Hoyas fell to Xavier in the Big East opener in D.C. Georgetown played well offensively but could not consistently string together stops, especially in the second half.

“They got hot, but we let them get hot,” Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing said following the defeat. “When you give up 50 points in the paint, 11 second-chance points and 17 fast-break points, all those things hurt.”

The Hoyas trailed by only five at the half against the Musketeers before surrendering 59 points in the second half. The Hoyas scored 51 points in the final 20 minutes themselves, but could not get stops on the defensive end.

Georgetown guard Primo Spears was 50% from the field on his way to scoring a team-high 22 points.

In UConn, the Hoyas face the toughest test yet by far. The Huskies are the best team in the conference and one of the best in the country, including one of the few remaining undefeated squads.

Georgetown will have its hands full come Tuesday night and it feels like 22 straight Big East losses is unfortunately unavoidable.

  • Head Coach: Dan Hurley (5th season, 85-47 record at UConn)

  • Record: 12-0 (1-0 in Big East)

  • Last Time Out: Def. Butler 68-46 on 12/17

  • Player to Watch: Adama Sonogo

UConn has been the most dominant team in the country in the opening six weeks of the season.

The Huskies are 12-0, boast wins over Alabama, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Butler while winning every game on its schedule by double-digits. In fact, the smallest margin of victory was a 10 point win over Oklahoma State on December 1.

In fact, UConn’s average margin of victory this season currently sits at 26.2 points, the best in the country.

They not only have the players, they have the team; and a team that enjoys playing together. The Huskies are top 10 nationally in team assists per game and top 20 in points per game. Defensively, they sit 10th in the nation in points allowed per game.

Again…they’re dominating.

Adama Sonogo is my player to watch because he’s the early season front-runner for Big East player of the year. The 6’9 240 lb. junior forward is averaging 19 points and 7 rebounds per game while shooting 62% from the field.

He’s a menace in the paint and it’ll be up to Georgetown’s Qudus Wahab and Akok Akok to slow him down. It’ll be a tall task; Sonogo has been held under 10 points only once all season and has scored 20+ in half of UConn’s games.

It’s going to take everything from the Hoyas to keep this close. Georgetown is a historic underdog in this game and rightfully so.

Honestly, I’d say UConn being a 21-point favorite is more of an endorsement of the Huskies and less of an indictment on Georgetown. Dan Hurley’s team has simply been that good this season.

Eventually, however, you have to imagine a slip-up will come for the Huskies. Why

can’t it be against the consensus bottom team in the conference?

The Big East be like that sometimes. One worth watching tonight in Storrs (hopefully).
