Georgetown was really close to pulling off one of the more shocking upsets in college basketball so far this season. The Hoyas took #2 UConn to the brink, leading by as many as 7 in the 2nd half before the Huskies surged for an 11 point win.
“I thought we fought,” head coach Patrick Ewing said following the game. “The mistakes that we made, the turnovers that we made let them back in the game.”
Point guard Primo Spears has been Georgetown’s most consistent scorer all season and brought it against UConn, scoring 19 points and adding 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
“The energy in the locker room is great,” Spears said after the game. “Like I said, it’s a loss, but like Coach said, we took a step as a group.”
Georgetown forced 30 three point attempts by UConn in the game, daring the Huskies to take deep shots and that kept the Hoyas in it for a while. Once the shots began falling, the game fell out of reach.
I’m not much of a believer in ‘moral victories’ in sports, but that performance really surprised me.

Georgetown hung right with one of the best teams in the country on the road and could easily have won that game.
The worst thing they can do now is lose all momentum and perform horribly against DePaul. There is a legitimate chance that Georgetown can snap its 22 game conference losing streak on Thursday night.
If they play like they did against UConn, they most assuredly will. However, that is far from a guarantee.

DePaul is consistently one of the bottom feeders of the Big East. It is not normal for Georgetown to find itself in similar company, but here we are.
The Blue Demons haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2004 and have only two winning seasons since entering the Big East in the 2005-06 season.
Coming into Thursday’s game against the Hoyas, DePaul has lost three games in a row and four of its last five. The Blue Demons played on Sunday at Creighton and fell 80-65 in the first ever Big East game on Christmas.
Georgetown and DePaul are the only two teams in the Big Eat that are under .500 on the year. For both, this is about as good an opportunity as they’ll get to win a conference game this season.
Last season, 33% of DePaul’s Big East wins were against Georgetown. When the bottom of the conference goes head-to-head, it’s big.
For a team that hasn’t won a conference game in 21 months, it’s as big as it gets.
