Big news rocked the college basketball world Thursday morning, as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Los Angeles Lakers are now looking to hire UConn MBB head coach Dan Hurley. The back-to-back National Champion, who has expressed aspirations of becoming an NBA coach, could finally have a path to the league.
Earlier this offseason, Dan Hurley shut down rumors of taking the Kentucky head coach job and that his focus is primarily UConn. His wife Andrea also did not like the idea of moving away from the beach and to Kentucky.
On Wednesday, Dan Hurley spoke to the media at UConn's Coaches Road Show in Stamford, CT. "You also have a market as a coach when you've accomplished a lot of things. Trying to find that sweet spot is something."
He noted that he is in contract negotiations with UConn. "When you've won back-to-back championships, you're not calling your agent worried about the status of your contract. You're more worried about recruiting, scheduling." The Huskies are favorable and hungry for a three-peat this season, and if Hurley does go, they would drop in preseason rankings.
Danny Hurley signed a 6-year $32.1 million dollar contract after winning the National Championship in 2023. After going back-to-back, it is only right that the best coach in college basketball gets a good pay day. Hurley said that it "is complicated" and that he is advising with his agent on contract negotiations. Hurley would owe UConn $1.875 million dollars as a liquidated damage if he left for an NBA team.
One piece of advice Dan Hurley gave Alex Karaban on whether or not to stay or go to the NBA was, "I think if it's a hard decision, you're torn on something, you stay put."
