"Winning Time" cancelled at HBO after 2 seasons

There won’t be a third season for Winning Time: HBO decided that last night's season-two finale of its Lakers Dynasty drama will actually be the show’s series finale.

The show, which first aired in March 2022, focuses on the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team and their rise in the early 1980s. The first season spotlighted Jerry Buss’ first year as the team’s owner and Magic Johnson’s rookie year, 1979-80. The second season is set during the four-year period after that.

Co-creator Max Borenstein confirmed the cancellation in a post on Twitter writing: "Not the ending that we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love."

Listen, I'm not a Laker fan, I'm literally the farthest thing from a Laker fan. I've hated the Lakers for 15+ years, however I know good TV when I see it and as a MASSIVE sports fan, I will always be intrigued with sports history shows. The 'ShowTime" Lakers are one of the most influential and iconic NBA teams of all time so any TV show based off of them is a must watch for me. I'm also born and raised in LA and while I was born way after this era of Lakers basketball, it is still apart of LA history.

The series finale featured the Boston Celtics winning the 1984 NBA Finals which is pretty ironic considering the show was all about the Lakers.

This is definitely a show that needed a 3 or4 seasons to finish the story. It is a true bummer that we won't be getting Season 3.
