Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Washington Capitals Winger Alex Ovechkin.
It was the week of a lifetime for the great Alexander Ovechkin, who passed the legendary Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history.
The 39-year old Ovechkin netted five goals this past week, scoring one in the win over Boston, and another in the loss to Carolina before scoring twice in Friday night’s 5-3 win over Chicago to tie Gretzky’s goal record of 894 career goals.
The amazing moment in D.C. on Friday night was perhaps immediately overtaken on Sunday afternoon as Ovechkin scored Washington’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Islanders in New York.
Ovi’s goal, roughly midway through the second period, sent the arena into a frenzy and stopped the game for about ten minutes, allowing time for both Ovechkin and the great Wayne Gretzky, who was in attendance, to speak.
What was once viewed as an unbreakable record has now been passed with just five games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season.
The Capitals currently sit in position to be the top seed in the Eastern Conference and have the best goal-scorer in NHL history in their side; it could be just the start of a magical spring in Washington.
The DMV saw six teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, and the George Washington and Georgetown basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Georgetown basketball guard Malik Mack scored 37 points in 40 minutes in Monday’s 85-82 win over Washington State in the first round of the Crown Tournament in Las Vegas, following up the performance with 25 points in another 40 minute outing in the quarterfinal loss to Nebraska.
Washington Nationals Shortstop CJ Abrams hit three home runs in six games this past week, including twice in the Nats’ three game trip to Toronto.
Washington Wizards Guard Jordan Poole scored 35 points in 29 minutes in Washington’s Monday loss to Miami
Washington Wizards Guard Bub Carrington scored a career-high 32 points on 12-18 shooting, including 7-10 from three, in Thursday's loss to Orlando.
